Dave Silver Band Revives Rock Gold
Dubbed DSB by fans, the six-piece combo dips into authentic sounds that launched acts of the 1960s for a unique sound.
By ROBERT KINSLER Special to the News
The 1989 film "Field of Dreams" served as an artistic illustration about how one man's love for baseball is able to heal and enrich his life. If there were a similarly-themed movie with rock 'n roll as the backdrop, it might be the Dave Silver Band providing the soundtrack.
An Orange County-based six-member band (dubbed "dSb" by fans) is writing new music, but has dipped into the authentic sounds and approach that launched the classic rock acts of the 1960s and '70's.
Indeed, while the group has only been performing since the fall of 2001, the band has already shared the bill with noted artists such as Midge Ure, Pat Travers and - most recently - Eric Burdon. This weekend, the Dave Silver Band will open for the Zombies, a British band that crafted some of the best songs of the 1960s, notably "She's Not There," "Tell Her No" and "Time Of The Season."
"The real story here is the 40-plus boomers, who listen and buy new music made by forty-plus artists," said Silver, who is principal songwriter and plays guitar for the band.
The band includes Silver and guitarist Dennis Mayerski, drummer Kirk Dennis, keyboardist Grant Dawdy, lead singer-harmonica player Fred Aileo and bassist Keith Kar.
Songs such as "Amazing People," "Love Another Day" and "Ruby Red" brim with accessible hooks and the timeless feel of material by artists such as the Eagles, Jackson Browne and the Doobie Brothers. The Dave Silver Band will feature songs off the group's debut, "Leave It Alone," as well as songs from a forthcoming release in San Juan Capistrano on Saturday.
From its humble beginnings as an effort by Silver and Mayerski to jam together to its growth as a force bringing new life to so-called classic rock, the members of the Dave Silver Band are bringing back the magic of rock. It has performed at venues such as the Orange Blossom Festival in Riverside, the International Street Fair in Orange and the Earth Day Festival at the Huntington Beach Pier.
The Dave Silver Band will perform with the Zombies (featuring original members keyboardist Rod Argent and singer Colin Blunstone) at the Coach House, 33157 Camino Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano, at 8 p.m. on Feb. 28.

Eric Burdon and The New Animals Revive Rock Memories
by Joe McGaha
(Included in Live Magazine's excellent and very positive review of Eric Burdon's appearance at The Coach House in January, was this text...)
Last night, two bands opened the show. After a very strong performance by Savage City, the Dave Silver Band came onstage. The Dave Silver Band reminds me a lot of the bands of the '70's and '80's, particularly of Styx, because of the theatrical style. Fred Aiello is the lead singer. He saunters and kicks his way across the stage, sometimes behaving more like an actor than like a pop singer. It seems like every song is a theatrical role for him, and he changes his entire manner of being (movement, facial expressions, etc.) to accommodate that role. There was one song (When the Voices Come) where he played the part of a mental hospital patient hearing voices. It was very interesting.
